Another Ice season has started.

Several years ago I wrote a blog about the First Day of the Season.  In it I reference the excitement of driving over the Kancamagus highway and up I-93 for the first glimpse of Cannon and joys of anticipation that it brings.  This years first day out was different.  I still hit Cannon for my first day on ice but I came from the west for the first time.  I no longer live in Madison NH.  I have moved with my family to Richmond VT.  So the drive to Cannon was wholly different.  No glimpse of the adventure to come as I drive up into the notch.  This time I had to be patient and wonder.  The first view of conditions comes when I get out of my car in the parking lot.  These days it is less of a mystery thanks to NEice.com and NECLIMBS.com and their regular updates.  I still wonder what I will find, and to me that is the exciting part of ice climbing, day to day things change and you never know what you will get…

Here is a quick look at what I found on my first three days out on Cannon and in Smugglers Notch.

Routes:Cannon-Fafnir, Black Dike, Hassig’s Direct.  Smuggs- Daves Snotsicle, Blue Room.
